Ferrari 812 Superfast

About the Ferrari 812 Superfast

At the intersection of the circles of Ferrari's Venn diagram, Car and Driver, and November 1971, there is a very particular brilliance of common points. It was then that C / D organized the first-ever Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Dash Memorial Trophy. The participants were a hodgepodge of vehicles, many of them modified. But the winning car, a Ferrari 365GTB / 4 Daytona driven by the one and only Brock Yates and professional runner Dan Gurney, was in stock. And the spirit of this Ferrari continues in the 812 Superfast.

What does "812" mean?
Unlike many other brands, the name of this Ferrari is 100% literal. The "8" represents 800 cavalli vapore, the Italian power. Italian horses are a little smaller than those raised in Kentucky, which equals 789 horses in the United States. The "12" designates 12 cylinders, arranged in two banks arranged in a perfectly balanced V at 60 degrees. And "Superfast", well, the test figures of this car testify to this title.

The engine is part of a long lineage of Ferrari's V-12, including that of this Cannonball star. In simple terms, this 6.5-liter V-12 is a raised version of the F12 engine. But, according to Ferrari, it is composed of 75% new parts, including a system that constantly varies the length of the intake channel. The indicated red line is 9000 rpm (although Ferrari says it runs at only 8900). Anyway, if you have the opportunity, you will frequently explore the upper limits of engine speed. The sound is not as loud as that of a 911 GT3 or a McLaren 720. At maximum power, the 812 emits 91 decibels compared to the Porsche 100 and the McLaren 95, but it's a sound that penetrates in the soul. It also reminds you that engineers, when pushed and challenged like Ferrari, can be as artistic as designers.

How fast is Superfast
Rear-wheel drive cars generally lack the grip required for a time of less than 3.0 seconds between zero and 60 mph, yet this 812 handles it in 2.8 seconds. It also reaches 100 mph in 5.8 seconds and completes the quarter mile in 10.5 to 138 mph. Just 7.1 seconds later, the 812 reaches 170 mph. Nevertheless, the McLaren 720S (also rear-wheel drive) is faster because it weighs nearly 700 kilos less than the 812. This does not diminish the fact that the Ferrari accelerates so fast from 70 mph that it only takes half a mile of open interstate and 9.3 seconds to show the driver and a passenger what feels like 150 km / h.

Four superb Pirelli P Zero PZ4 tires and carbon-ceramic disc brakes that do not look too small on a Boeing 737 only require 142 feet - and this car weighs 3851 pounds.

The ergonomics of the cabin is excellent. All normal steering wheel controls are moved to various steering wheel buttons. The idea is that it allows the driver to keep both hands on the steering wheel at all times. Random steering is not necessary, even in roundabouts, as the 812 incorporates rear axle steering.

Ferrari's long-standing use of magnetorheological dampers - dating back to the 2007 599GTB - is bearing fruit as the 812 city walk is in line with that of a family sedan, particularly in bumpy road mode. Set the Race-mounted mode switch to Race and the 812 will maintain a side grip equal to 1.00g.

If the 812 has a dynamic weakness, it's the double-clutch transaxle. Many drivers have experienced difficult gear changes, especially when the gearbox reengages after an automatic engine shutdown, when the engine stops, when the car stops only while driving. But these are small potato stuff. In addition, do you really want your Italian exoticism to be as fluid as a Honda Accord?

Car and driver
Even in still position, the 812 gives the impression that it sprints, especially with the Rosso Corsa paint (red race) used by our test example. Looking at him, you can almost see the work of the blower on his body. Air rises, passes over and around the front wings by canals and tunnels that seem to have been sculpted by fluid dynamics. The design is the magic trick to pack a ton of details without seeming too busy. Of course, a lot of things happen, but as with any art, the details make the picture more beautiful. This is, after all, Ferrari's flagship product, which even appears above LaFerrari Aperta on its consumer website.
