Pierre Balmain came from a family that worked closely with fabric and designs. His father sold drapery and his sister and mother ran a boutique. Though he was initially studying to become an architect, Balmain fell in love with designing dresses. Leaving school, he trained under British designer Edward Molyneux. After WWII, he designed for Lucien Legong alongside Christian Dior. In 1945, The French Fashion House of Balmain was finally established. He was known for his opulent designs that include animal print which is still a style used in the present.
